Results of Treatment

A realistic expectation is 70% clearance of small surface veins and up to 80% clearance of larger varicose veins. This will be achieved in 90% of patients. There are alternative methods of treatment such as surgical stripping of varicose veins, and thermal destruction  of varicose veins by laser or radio-frequency. Frequently, these methods require further treatment by sclerotherapy in order to achieve a satisfactory result. Dr Campbell prefers to treat all of the diseased veins in the course of a comprehensive plan of sclerotherapy.

Success rates with ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy injecting sclerosant foam into varicose veins are comparable to recently published results for operative surgery.

Varicose veins are a chronic progressive disease, so there is no form of treatment which can guarantee freedom from the possibility of the development of recurrent varicose veins.
The best way of ensuring the continual health of your legs from the venous point of view is to have a regular annual check-up by clinical and ultrasound examination followed by sclerotherapy treatment of any diseased veins identified.
